  1. Former name for the Panama isthmus as a
  2. whole, and still the name of an eastern
  3. province of Panama; area 16,803 sq km/6,490
  4. sq mi; population (1980) 26,500. The Gulf of
  5. Darien, part of the Caribbean sea, lies
  6. between Panama and Colombia. The Darien Gap
  7. is the complex of swamp, jungle, and ravines,
  8. which long prevented the linking of the North
  9. and South American sections of the
  10. Pan-American Highway, stretching about 300
  11. km/200 mi between Canitas, Panama, and
  12. Chigorodo, Colombia. At the Colombian end is
  13. the Great Atrato Swamp, 60 km/35 mi across
  14. and over 300 m/1,000 ft deep. The Darien
  15. Expedition was a Scottish attempt to colonize
  16. the isthmus 1698-99, which failed
  17. disastrously owing to the climate and Spanish
  18. hostility. The British Trans-Americas
  19. Expedition, led by John Blashford-Snell, made
  20. the first motorized crossing in 1972.
